Wow!!!!!!! My mind is officially blown. A huge round of applause for Renée Watson and the Random House team for pulling this all together! For all of you who missed our segment on NBC Nightly News, here it is for your viewing pleasure! I’m so thrilled and honored to be a part of this project.
A big THANK YOU to everyone who supported this venture at Random House, the producers at NBC Nightly News, Cindy and the gang at Maple Street Book Shop, and everyone who has supported and championed this book~
I just returned from an AMAZING trip to New Orleans where I met Renée Watson and a whole host of other cool people for the first time. Unfortunately I forgot to take out my camera during most of the days there (my fork kept getting in the way). The NBC segment on A PLACE WHERE HURRICANES HAPPEN is slotted to air on NBC Nightly News, this
SATURDAY, AUGUST 29
instead of Thursday, August 26. Please tune in and/or set your dvrs. Hopefully the time won’t change again, but I will confirm this date and time again tomorrow. I will post more on the trip and activity tomorrow. My bed is calling.
If there’s anyone from NOLA who grabbed a few pics of the events and would like to e-mail me at news at shadrastrickland dot com, my world would be rocked~
What a way to start a Sunday. There are a few things to check out today. First, head on over to Color Online to see a nice shout out for APWHH.
After you’re done there, stop by 7-Imp to see a wonderful feature of APWHH along with the latest from Sean Qualls (the amazing and talented).
Our signing is listed in the “Special Events section of NOLA.com via the Times-Picayune. You can find other Katrina Anniversary listings there as well.
Lastly, and not entirely related, check out my new dress that I bought last night for the trip.
Today is a very big day. About a week and a half ago Jan Burkins and Roberta Gardner of Literacyhead came by my studio for a three hour interview! Today, you can see a lot of what we talked about at Literacyhead.com, an online magazine created to help teachers nurture their creative lives while they meet the demands of high accountability to which they are subject. It’s a fantastic site that helps breathe some life back into the classroom and reading. I am so honored to have had my art on the site in the past and am knocked off of my feet to be featured throughout this month. So, enjoy the site and become a literacyhead yourself!
And, without further ado, the trailer for A PLACE WHERE HURRICANES HAPPEN is finally up! A HUGE “Thank you” goes out to LaNese Harris, my cousin and producer extraordinaire at Southern Peach Productions, for a job well done! Another thank you goes out to my friend and (usual) trailer partner-in-crime editor, Nadirah Bell for trying to squeeze it in before and after her move across country. My family rocks!
I am delighted to be a part of two great projects that promote literacy and the arts. You can see my work in this month’s issue of, Dream Chasers Magazine, edited by Sarah Bash-Gleason and Literacyhead.com, a web site that offers lessons for teaching literacy through art! Tell your friends, family members, creative neighbors, and teacher friends (everyone knows at least one teacher, right?) about www.literacyhead.com!
Thank you to Jan Burkins, Jamie D’Angelo and Sarah Bash-Gleason for including me in these two great projects!
Enjoy this video of Kadir Nelson discussing his paintings for Coca-Cola. Such beautiful work-it’s Kadir Nelson (whose work is ridiculously beautiful and inspiring) with a touch of Aaron Douglas (whose work I adore).
Today is the day I am featured on The Brown Bookshelf. Check out 28 Days Later for a lengthy interview avec moi and a sneak peak at my new book. Thanks Don for a great interview, and special thanks for that magic wand trick…hilarious.

It’s such a good feeling when life comes full circle. Today I spoke at Parson’s School of Art and Design with David Ezra Stein and Nancy Paulsen. We were invited by Pat Cummings as special guests for her Children’s Book Illustration Class. The bulk of the talks were about breaking into the business and the long road to getting published. I have uploaded a couple of today’s videos on my Youtube channel. Enjoy~
