Printmaking in books

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

My etching class ended last night. I was able to pull one more print that I’m almost happy with, but will now be renting space at the Atlanta Printmaker’s Studio in order to study the craft and practice more. In the meantime, here is last night’s progress on the hummingbird piece. The drawing looks a little labored due to my having to redraw through the hard ground and having to reapply and redraw the soft ground details as well, and in this printing, I left a fair amount of ink on the plate for more plate tone….

My instructor, Kathy Garrou, brought in a book done completely in engraving! How crazy that? It’s a GORGEOUS book called TRICK OF THE TALE, written by John and Caitlin Matthews and illustrated by Tomislav Tomic. This book is published by Candlewick Press, who is ironically the publisher of my next book, WHITE WATER~ I can’t wait to add this book to my collection.

From the publisher: Enter (carefully) the world of the tricksters, those wily creatures who lie their way out of trouble, cheat when they get a chance, and devise elaborate tricks to get what they want — with delightfully unpredictable results. This truly diverse, elegantly illustrated collection follows such clever characters as Anansi, Coyote, Brer Rabbit, and others who play a role in a multicultural array of storytelling traditions, from African to Inuit to European, Tibetan to Native American to Japanese. Celebrate the slyest trickster tales from around the world in a lavish volume that gives a well-loved story tradition its rightful due.

Speaking of WHITE WATER…back to work~

Enjoy this video of Kadir Nelson discussing his paintings for Coca-Cola. Such beautiful work-it’s Kadir Nelson (whose work is ridiculously beautiful and inspiring) with a touch of Aaron Douglas (whose work I adore).

Tae Eun Yoo

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

One of my favorite people in this world is Tae Eun Yoo. If you see her charming artwork you will understand why. All of the beauty and warmth that radiates from it is a direct reflection of her personality. Seriously, if I could keep her in my pocket at all times I would. Since I can’t, I keep her artwork around my home and studio along with many of my other ridiculously talented homies.

The great Yoote has released a new limited edition print in her Etsy shop. Soon she will be selling a small number of hand pulled originals of this image as well. I am sitting on my hands to keep from buying it (only because I have spent a grip {a.k.a.”a lot of”, “too much”,”a larger amount than usual-usually not tax deductible”} of money on framing and prints recently).

While you’re checking out Tae’s Etsy Store, you should also take a look at her newest book with Alison McGhee called So Many Days. It’s a lovely tribute to growing up and all of the wondrous doors that are open to us along life’s journey.

Do it Tae, do it!

alltheworldcover-1-1

I was hanging out with my friend Tae a few weeks back and stumbled upon two killer books that everyone must see. First, there’s ALL THE WORLD illustrated by Marla Frazee and Liz Garton Scanlon. I haven’t seen a more perfect book since Jonathan Bean’s AT NIGHT or Zetta Elliott’s BIRD (shameless, I know). See a detailed synopsis, and behind the scenes look here.

From the publisher:

All the world is here.

It is there.

It is everywhere.

All the world is right where you are.

Now.

Following a circle of family and friends through the course of a day from morning till night, this book affirms the importance of all things great and small in our world, from the tiniest shell on the beach, to warm family connections, to the widest sunset sky

. . . and while you're at the bookstore check out the gorgeous linoleum prints in ONLY A WITCH CAN FLY by Tae-Eun Yoo and Allison McGhee.

From the publisher:

If you were a young witch, who had not yet flown,
And the dark night sky held a round yellow moon
and the moon shone her light on the silent broom
and the dark cat beside you crooned, Soar,
would you too begin to cry,
because of your longing to fly?
Only a witch can fly.

Only a witch can fly.

But one little girl wants to fly—more than anything. So on a special night, with the moon shining bright and her cat by her side, she gathers herself up, she grips her broom tight, and she tries. And she fails. And she’s brave. And she tries again. Until . . .

Children’s Book Boot Camp

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

For those of you who have a great idea for a kid’s book, but can’t seem to find the time to pull the dummy together, here is a great opportunity for you! Pat Cummings (children’s book author/illustrator extraordinaire a.k.a. my grad school advisor) hosts a boot camp for people who are interested in making children’s books. I highly recommend it. It’s open to ten people, so hurry and put your name in the pot!
